Growing Yourself As An Artist
- Setting Singing Goals
- Agents, Talent Managers, and Record Labels
- Build Your Knowledge As An Artist
At times when we work on music we can feel that we are regressing.
The best way to consistently measure growth is setting reasonable singing goals.
Your goals will determine your singing ability.
You have to have an outside perspective on how you see yourself growing as an artist.
Someone who gets stuck on how they sound will have trouble growing. Record labels and talent managers like to work with artists that already know what kind of music they want to produce.
As an artist you want to make sure to develop yourself in your knowledge and skills; so when you have opportunities you can be sure of yourself when you take them.
Practice Setting Reasonable Singing Goals
When setting goals with singing you want to be distinct on what you are trying to improve.
First, we want to look at what we already know, and then use that information to guide us.
You can start by asking yourself questions like: Why do I want to improve my singing and what don’t I like about my voice?
Becoming a music artist starts with throwing yourself out there. You will never know unless you try. When you are first starting, set aside time.
Brainstorm how long you think it will take you to improve. If it’s breathing control, work on breathing control. If it’s higher notes, work on higher notes.
Use a calendar and give yourself a deadline. You can be logical and plan out your steps. It’s good to be a versatile artist.
Someone who can sing, write, produce, and find their own gigs. Set aside time to build on each of those skills.
This would be some of the first things to work on if you’re looking to be an independent entrepreneurial artist.
Some people don’t want to do it all. That’s ok, there are talent managers and producers that can help get you started.
Agents, Talent Managers, & Record Labels Oh My!
Talent managers are the people who help promote and find you gigs. Usually this is a contract based agreement. You pay money to the agent to help you grow as an artist.
Meanwhile, the agent grows success off of your success. Record labels work very similarly.
Record labels like to see an artist that already has it figured out.
This means they are looking for artists that have already grown their fan base, artists who know what style of music they like to perform, and artists that can already sing.
Self identity is a big thing in the music world. Your personal brand is what will ultimately guide you to success.
Be consistent with your music, styles, and energy. A record label is likely to sign you on if you already have those things figured out.
Build Your Knowledge As An Artist
Learn all there is to know about the field you want to work in.
If that’s R&B music, study the history behind R&B. Look at R&B artists and see how they came to be.
We live in a world with countless celebrities and plenty of stories as to how they came to be.
One thing is generally constant, hard work pays off. Although some of our favorite artists may take forever to release an album.
They are working hard to be on stage and perform. It takes a lot to go on tour and remain consistent in mental and physical health.
Take time to mentally prepare if you are coming up in your creative works. Lastly, make sure to smile and enjoy the process.
