How To Define Your Unique Voice

  • Practicing With Your Voice
  • Finding Comfort In Your Own Sound
  • Developing Through Writing

Voice An important thing to note: you already have your voice, you are looking for something that feels comfortable and sounds good within your voice.

The first thing we should look at when finding our voice is what music we listen to. What music we like to sing, and what feels comfortable to sing.

Try looking at the majority of music you like, and discovering which genre you would fit yourself into. The hardest part about finding your voice is finding where to start.

Practicing With Your Voice

Voice Vocal exercises don’t guarantee you finding your voice. Finding your voice is a path that only you can decide. Vocal exercises help with comfortability and vocal techniques.

You can learn riffs, vibrato, sustain, and control. You can learn how to sing exactly like another artist, but in terms of your own sound; your choice to use more or less vibrato, more or less riffs, more or less muscles, is ultimately up to you.

The things your vocal cords do naturally, your range, and your ability to discern what you like and don’t like about your voice is what makes your voice.

Think of it like using a recipe, but when you add other items that weren’t in the recipe, it becomes your recipe. We tend to forget that we are entirely in control, and can pick and choose the way we sing.

Finding Comfort In Your Own Sound

Voice Start by building a relationship with your vocal range. Understanding your range allows you to have better control over your chest, mixed and head voice.

If you feel more comfortable using more notes, you can do a lot more with your vocal cords.

You want to try to replicate the song without losing too much of its core values(notes, riffs, sustain, emotions, etc), while also remaining within your own creativity. Take advantage of the things that your voice finds easy, because it’s not the same for everyone.

Your ability to add notes or subtract them from a song is what makes the way you sing it unique. Get creative, try singing things differently than the artist. Ultimately when we sing other singers’ songs, we are trying to sound like them.

It can be difficult to understand what your voice is if you’ve never attempted singing your own songs.

Developing Through Writing

Maybe you’re unsure where to start or you feel like you’re a bad writer. We can agree, you have to spend time with something to become better at it. This includes writing music.

If you refuse to write because you’ve had writer’s block, you have to keep trying. Don’t Stress yourself, and limit yourself to 15 min of writing per day.

There are plenty of beats on youtube that you can use to get yourself started. Type in your favorite artist followed by “type beat”. Pick a beat and try finding some melodies to sing with.

Over time you will get better with writing and singing melodies which in turn will help you find your voice and what’s comfortable.
