We’ve always heard that you either have it or you don’t when it comes to singing. At voicercise we talk about the singing muscles and what can be used to help improve your tonality.
Pitch is something that some people think you have to be born with. However, just like you can recite the alphabet, pitch is no different.
Think about it, there are a limited number of keys on the piano and your range exists from one point to another.
If you are able to memorize all the notes you can always remain on pitch.
Common Placement Errors
When you’re singing a song have you ever noticed your voice shift down or up in pitch? Sometimes when we are singing a song that is on the higher end of our register, our voices will shift to a lower key that is most comfortable.
This is because the lower notes are closest to our speaking voices. We use our speaking voices likely every day so our voice is likely to be comfortable around that range.
When you push your voice outside of a range that is comfortable, the voice will get tired and sometimes retreat back around that speaking voice.
Remaining on pitch without consistency can be difficult, so make sure you are listening closely and practicing daily.
If you find you have trouble hearing whether you are on key, it is best to get a vocal tuner. You can find these on your app store. Using one, while practicing singing with the piano, can help you to see which notes are the correct ones.
Understanding Range
Range is very important as it can tell you your current limits. Meaning your highest note and your lowest note. Knowing this simplifies choosing songs as you can look up the range of any song.
If you know your range but have trouble with your movement, you will want to do exercises that target that. Range can also be used to determine your chest, mixed, and head voice.
Understanding your vocal registers can help you remain on key. For example, if a note is relatively high and i know what my range is, then i will know whether to use my mixed or head voice. Sometimes when we shoot for a high note, we will overpush which can cause us to fall off pitch.
Take the time to study your range so you can develop an understanding of what’s comfortable to sing.
Pitch Exercises
Vocal range and pitch take time to develop. If you want your ear to improve, you must spend time with slide exercises, or chromatic piano exercises. Chromatic means you will play one note after the other in ascending or descending order.
Work your way through your range and write down what notes feel tight. Measure your progress after two weeks and write down if the notes feel different.
Make sure you are doing and using muscle exercises to develop your voice. The slides will help you phonetically and improve your moveability.
Consistency is key to developing perfect pitch and tone.
