Respecting Your Voice

- Perspective Of Confidence
Have you ever asked yourself “ What’s so good about my voice?”. I encourage you to think of at least one strength that your voice has. There are many vocal strengths a voice can have: breathing control, pitch, vocal dynamics, confidence, pronunciation, belting, etc. It’s important that we look at our strengths so we can fix our weaknesses.
Understanding why our voice isn’t doing something we want it to, makes the process of singing much more enjoyable.
The reason is because it’s less frustrating when you know how to fix a mistake. A lot of our vocal mistakes come from not trusting ourselves, holding ourselves back because we feel unconfident.
Respecting your voice will help you understand your worth and decrease the times you feel unconfident.
Confidence: Understanding Your Worth
The first thing to understand is that you are valid. Say it! “I am Valid”. Everything you say, sing, and do has meaning to it. That is what it means to be a confident artist/musician.
Finding your confidence is a slow dance. It may take some time for you to feel sure of yourself. Especially if you find yourself being “self deprecating” towards your voice. These are things we learn at a young age, but can learn out of with time.
Be patient with your voice, and know that you are not the only one who feels this way. Confidence will come with experience, as you learn to control your voice, most of your fears will go away as you now have a solution to the problem.
Singing can be frustrating/fearful if we keep singing the same way without knowing how to fix it.
Reality:Detaching Yourself From Narratives
Do you ever find yourself comparing your voice to other artists, celebrities, friends, or family members? That would be your first step in the WRONG direction.
We have to understand that we all come from different backgrounds, communities, locations, families, etc. We have different voices, bodies, and ways of thinking. Some people are born into families that have connections. Some people took voice lessons as a kid, whereas others may not have taken any lessons until they were an adult.
Most celebrities today have the voices they do because of practice and experience; and anyone can do that.
What they don’t tell you is all that goes into studio recording and vocal production. That there are effects that can make you sound louder, softer, pitch correcting, and so much more.
I encourage you to relook into any celebrity you may have listened to and compare the studio version to a live version. You will find that nobody is perfect, but we can try our best to come to our own definition of what that may be.
Perspective
Success can be seen in many different avenues of singing, no matter where you come from and what you’ve done up to this point, singing is possible for anyone.
Your success is measured with how much you put in. Some people gauge success in their performances, where others gauge it in their numbers. A lot of people never find success because they stop.
Life happens, things get in the way, but it’s up to you to decide where your voice will go. No one can take that away from you. So you would be the only one standing in your way. Respecting your voice and yourself is the most crucial part of singing, because without it, how can we sing so confidently with so little faith in ourselves.
