- Choosing The Right Song
We all get scared of things that are unfamiliar, even high notes. If you tense up when you sing a high note, chances are you’re looking for an easy way to improve this.
With all muscles, it takes time to improve, but how you improve is ultimately up to your repetition.
Understanding your range will make this easier, and picking a good song is very important.
These simple but definite truths will be the key to unlocking those high notes.
Consistency With Singing High Notes
Consistency will always be key when perfecting any skill. When it comes to high notes, it’s important to stretch out what you think your range is.
If your highest note is an E5 then you will want to do exercises up to that E5 everyday.
Spending about 10-15 min a day doing different exercises that help you reach that note, will expand your muscles overtime.
Eventually singing that E5 won’t be as hard. Your next step is to sing an F5, which is the very next note on a piano.
If you don’t own a piano, there are several apps or online browsers that can play you a specific note.
For some, it can take a few days to improve, and others it can take longer. This all depends on how consistent you are.
Understanding Your Range
Imagine a truck driver without GPS, they would have no clue where they were going.
Knowing your range is the key to improving and understanding how to improve.
You can go on youtube and find videos that will help you test your range. Once you know your highest and your lowest notes, you are good to go.
When singing a high note, your muscles vibrate faster and push more air out, maintaining a high note can sometimes wear out your muscles.
It’s important to stay hydrated with room temperature water so they can work properly.
Over time your muscles will begin to adjust and be able to hold higher notes.
Try not to work your muscles too hard as to cause discomfort or pain. If you feel yourself straining, take about 5 minutes to breathe, or try doing some lip rolls.
Choosing The Right Song
Now you have your GPS, but you need the location of where to drop off the goods.
Picking a song can be a hard choice. The most important thing is that the song will have you executing notes that accentuate your range.
For example, if your highest note you can belt is an A#4 then you will want to pick a song where the singer is hitting that note.
If you know what transposing is, you can even bring a song down to a more comfortable key that allows you to belt a specific song.
When singing high notes there are many songs with many ranges, however, you can look up songs by your vocal range on google and go from there.
If you work with songs where your voice is comfortable you will never be able to expand outside that comfort unless you try.
