Have you been dealing with allergies and are finding it difficult to sing? Allergies come and go, but that doesn’t help us if we have a show or an event later in the day.

Some things you want to look into are: pollen count, medication for allergies, and your nutrition.

Paying close attention to these things can help you greatly reduce the amount of allergies you have.

How Does Pollen Effect Allergies?

Genres

If you have allergies and have been dealing with them for some time, you know that pollen is a microscopic powder that comes from plants.

These spores travel through the air and into our nose, or mouth and can make the areas inflamed. Your body creates mucus to get rid of the pollen but in turn makes it difficult to sing.

Pollen is something that is researched and you can actually see the pollen count for a specific area. Masks have become more common and some are proven to be helpful in preventing exposure.

If you know you have a cookout to go to, it may not be wise to stay outside the whole time as that can increase your exposure to pollen.

This is more of a precautionary reason if you have something important that requires you to sing.

Depending on how bad your symptoms are you may seek to take medication. Medication can be very helpful but it comes at a cost.

When singing it is always important to stay hydrated. When you are singing, your vocal chords are normally coated in a layer of water and saliva that keep them from becoming dry.

Depending on your medication, this can dry out your throat. The medication may help with the mucus, but in turn dehydrates your throat.

This is the same for caffeine and having a dry throat makes it much harder to sing.

There are other alternatives to help you clear allergies like nutrition.
