As an artist, whether you are developing or experienced, it is vital that you have a fanbase that not only supports you but continues to do so. If you read our blog post, “How to Land a Record Label,” you know how to gain supporters. Now we want to talk about why it’s a must for a lucrative music career.
WHAT EXACTLY IS A FANBASE?
A fanbase is a group of like-minded people who will understand your artistry and support you through your musical career.
They are the people who will buy the tickets to your shows, stream your music, and understand you as an artist and more. Establishing a true fanbase takes time and strategy but it’s the small impacts that will create the big outcome.
PAY ENOUGH ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY SAY
Your fanbase will also give you genuine feedback on your music. Although your sound may vary, because ultimately it is your art, you do want to pay attention to repeating critiques and recognize which types of songs the majority of your fans are into. Try not to worry too hard about pleasing everybody though, it is your right as an artist to create what makes you feel the happiest.
QUESTION
Have you ever heard of an artist or band you had never heard before, from a friend? What about hearing a great song on the radio and you had no idea who the artist was? This happened from the power of a strong fanbase. People who love your music will naturally spread the word that you are a star and when they talk, their friends will listen.
PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE/GET THEM TO LIKE YOU
It is always a good idea too, to perform at local venues so that people will here you live.
There’s something about the way you connect with an artist during their live performance and if you’re confident in your music people will get to talking.
Word-of-mouth is one of the greatest ways to market yourself and all it requires is a simple moment of the great discovery that is your music.
Establishing a certain amount of interest or likeness can prove to newcomers that you are relatable and talented. With platforms like Instagram and Twitter people can even visualize your likeness; it’s best to take advantage of social media while it is major.
Most times when I listen to music on platforms like SoundCloud, I am more inclined to listen to songs with more likes. Even if an artist has a lot of followers on Instagram, I am more tempted to check out their sound and follow their journey.
Another way to escalate interest is to post videos of yourself jamming out to a classic song or original will give your fans an insight on how much you love music. When fans feel like they can see and feel your passion and talent they will support you because you make them feel good.
EYES ON THE PRIZE
If you are able to focus on the different things you can do to grow your fanbase, success will come in no time. Remember that your fans and potential fans want to feel heard and excited.
Keeping things interesting and progressive is vital but don’t forget to stay true to yourself and your art.
Growing a fanbase will really make or break you as an artist, after all they are the ones who will keep you creating and prospering no matter what.
