Lets Break The Stigma About Expanding Vocal Range!
Q: Can anyone expand their vocal range?
Well! I have the say, the reason many singers have been given the idea they they cannot expand their range is due to old technique. The type of singing technique that was created 200-400 years ago before science was really a thing.
Fast forward 200 years and now, we have super advanced in technology, in the area of science specifically.
(Think MRI machines being able to see your diaphragm as it works, or teeny tiny cameras going down the throat and watching our vocal chords vibrate!)
And in being able to apply science to singing, we’ve been able to understand how our voices really work. How to gain control over every aspect of it, including building vocal range.
As long as we understand that in the human body the only way we control anything is by muscle function…and if it’s easy, good control, it’s actually by muscle memory.
Is Vocal Range and Breathing Always Connected?
When a set of muscles work under your control and “listen” to your commands, yes anybody can absolutely expand their range!
However, way too often a new singer or sometimes even a professional singers, will be given voice lesson upon voice lesson, merely teaching them how to “use” their diaphragm.
When it’s quite obvious that if they have been trying to learn how to sing for years, and learning about using their diaphragm for years, however they still have difficulty expanding their vocal range, it would be safe to say that something ELSE could be creating the problem.
The biggest issue here, being that many vocalist are lead to believe it’s THEM. That they have too little born in talent and they should just give up.
WRONG!
So What Else Contributes to Expanding My Vocal Range?
If you are taking voice lessons and endlessly learning how to breathe is not expanding you’re vocal range the teacher and NOT the student is to blame.
If I were taking a math class, no teacher would ever be hired again if he claimed the student was the problem, because the student was not born with the ability to do math. His teaching skills would be the culprit here. That math teacher with all failing students better restudy and learn how to teach better!
Therefor any singing technique you are taught should be easy to understand and apply to make a change in your range right now.
How Do We Know For Sure Expanding Vocal Range is Possible?
The best way we can tell that it is possible to have more then one range (Alto, Soprano, 2nd Soprano etc.) is by marking the growth of the professional singers we idolize.
Just because a person is born with thick vocal chords that more easily produce low notes, does not mean they can’t learn how to control them to vibrate more quickly to produce higher notes.
Witness, Adele, Micheal Jackson, or even Beyonce who we’ve all seen get better and better and better over the ages.
Many singers sing songs that could not actually be classified as just Alto, Soprano, Tenor or Bass. Their songs fall over multiple singing ranges in one song. And that’s happening more and more as time’s progresses.
They’ve figured it out.
So YES! You can expand your range. Anyone whom says you cannot is applying old technique. Just know that! Muscles can always come back from being weak. Any any muscles you aren’t using for an extended period of time will atrophy.
Just like if you had killer ABS… and then stopped working out for a time. Bye Bye Abs.. and bye bye high notes.
So when you take a big break from singing, don’t be alarmed if you loose some range.
Just know with a bit of the correct practice your abilities will return! I’m 100% positive if that!
I hope you have a wonderful day!
