Handling Stage Fright is probably the biggest and most common singing difficulties we help people overcome on a regular basis.
What is stagefright?
You could Define Stage Fright as:
- a lack of confidence,
- fear of singing in front of people,
- various body parts shaking uncontrollably,
- one’s throat closing up,
- having a hard time breathing,
- no sound coming out,
- loosing control of words or melodies or even harmonies,
- fear of looking or sounding stupid
- Singing only what’s “safe” not what you really capable of
- uncomfortable facing or looking at your audience
- needing to close your eyes
- or just plain embarrassment
Those are all pretty uncomfortable sensations. Would you agree?
However, there are many many instances these same people, do things even though they are uncomfortable, every day. Why? Because they have decided that the outcome, is more important to them, then the uncomfortable feeling they feel.
For instance, you may be too scared to sing on stage right now. But say the scenario changed and you were now being offered 5 millions dollars to sing a song on stage. Would 5 million dollars be worth feeling uncomfortable for the length of a 3 minute song?
You see, courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the decision that something is more important then the fear we feel.
- Getting out of bed with a bat to check if you heard a “burglar” in the house: courage
- Telling off a bully, when they are messing with your best friend: courage
- Eating a meal your spouse made even though it looks or taste icky, because it is a gift, and their happiness in more important then your taste buds: courage
- Taking three kids on a plane, when wife can’t come and the in laws have never met the baby: courage
- Getting up and singing to a packed house or hushed crowd to a thunderous applause, when you are absolutely terrified: courage.
Remember, it’s not the absence of fear, the fear doesn’t go away by waiting it out. The uncomfortable feeling you feel, actually in most cases increases the longer you wait.
And yes, the opposite is true as well! The more you do it, the LESS fear you feel.
The most common misconception, I find in amateurs is the idea that famous people don’t have stagefright. That’s a big ole lie! There are many famous artist who admit to the worst stage fright, which they have performed with for years! (Feel free to do your own research, Mariah Carey and Bette Medler to name a few) And yet here they are making millions of dollars.
What it takes is courage. Lots and lots of courage, and being willing to prove your fear wrong when you find out what’s really waiting for you on the other side.
A thunderous applause? Adoring fans? A million dollars?
What is more important to you then fear?
What did you do today, or this week that showed courage. Think little minuscule.
Even though it’s uncomfortable you CAN do it. You do every day!
Here’s to a happy and successful 2017, you can do this!
If you need help we’re here for you!
