Finding Your Own Unique Voice.

your own unique voice
Every singer goes through a challenge of finding their own unique voice.

Some have the misconception that they have to sound like their favorite artist in order to be considered good.

One thing to keep in mind is that, when you sing a cover to your favorite song, you don’t have to sing it exactly like the artist.

Yeah, you may be able to sing at the exact tone of Adele, but what about your authentic tone?

Finding Your Unique Voice in Duplicating the Greats

Duplicating what other singers do can actually help you find your sound. If you are singing an Alicia Keys song and you add a Beyoncé growl in it, you are already creating your own unique voice to your cover.

Have you ever had a moment when you are trying to do a crazy difficult run that Ariana Grande can do seemingly easy, but you just can’t get it down? Practicing that difficult run will actually bring out what your voice can do naturally.

It won’t sound like Ariana Grande but that’s the point. Spend some time on that note or that run to find where it will be on key with your voice. You’ll be amazed to notice what your voice naturally does to adjust and create its own version of that tone quality.

The Greatest Things Take Time

In our culture, especially in America, people give up too easily. But news flash, instant gratification is only for minor things like shopping at the mall.

In most cases, people give up right before the greatness outcome.

Discouraging outcomes or comments is what really deters people from reaching their greatest potential but in reality, those discouragements should be your motivation to keep going.

Believe in yourself and your ability, you have an instrument inside you literally.

You just have to master the use of it.

Use Discouragement as a Motivator

When you are trying to find your own voice, or even just yourself, you should not let anything that other people say get in the way of what you are attempting to achieve.

Everybody will have opinions but one persons’ view on something will totally differ from the other persons’ opinion.

People create opinions based on their own reality so why let what they have to say affect you?

You have different goals, ideals, and ambitions so focus on what you feel is right. Only listen to those who understand the ideal scene of what you are going for.

Even in these rare situations you should see if you agree with what others tell you, is it helpful or not?

Criticism can sometimes make you better but other times it makes you feel worse.

If it makes you feel worse, don’t dwell on that opinion.

Only focus on what helps you grow and makes you feel amazing.

Become Obsessed with Your Sound

Don’t be afraid of what your sound sounds like! If you think of any famous artist, those people sound the way that they do because they practiced sounding authentic.

This means that when they were finding their sound, they did things that nobody else did.

If you get down on yourself every time you sound different than everybody else, you will never get to the point of being as amazing as the greatest artists.

If you have the idea that everything you sing should sound absolutely perfect every time, you will never make it to the same status of the greats.

Authenticity is Beautiful

Nothing you do the first few times will be perfect so take your time. Embrace your mistakes and learn from them. Remember that self-discovery is different from performing and there is an art to practicing.

Practice until you sound exactly how you want to. Finding your own unique voice is about being confident in your authenticity. Authenticity will always get you further in life rather than being and sounding just like everybody else.
