Some of our favorite singers in history have put all of their feelings into songs we know and love. Emoting heartbreaks, celebrations or even the hardships of life that will live on far beyond their lives.
As a singer you may ask how exactly to sing with this level of emotion. The answer is, by fully embracing the emotion of the song you are singing.
Picking a song is pretty important, mostly because you need to be able to connect with the meaning and story of the song. The communication behind the lyrics will activate your ability to emote in the story behind it all. And yes, it does require you to actually feel what you’re singing, to put all of the words into consideration and see how those words can connect with you.
What makes the words come alive when listening to someone perform?
There are some things you need to know if you want to be singing with emotion.
First you need to exercise proper dynamics in the song. That means that the louder parts and the softer parts are extreme enough that it makes a person feel something.
If you’re singing a run, try to push your voice out and then pull it back. That feels like an emotion, because emotions are wild dynamics. Volume is important, and not feeling afraid to go all the way to a volume and then all the way back will give the emotions more emphasis.
You also need to have enough lower and higher parts in the song that make a person feel like you’re about to lose control. Take them on a journey. Something that is very high then moving into a lower sound will work. If that’s difficult for you to do from a physical standpoint, technique wise, we suggest getting better at that. It’s something that creates an emotional moment when a person is listening to it.

Being strategic about putting your breath in certain spots is key.
Breathing is so diverse as far as technique when it comes to singing with emotion. Depending on the type of music that you’re singing, like classical music, the ability to sing as many notes as you can in one breath is thought of as good. The last thing in the world you want to do is try to sing a bunch of notes on one breath. This is because the emotion in breathing makes a person feel something.
This technique is thought of as amazing when you’re singing the likes of Michael Jackson. His breath control, wide vocal range and pure sentiment are just a few things that made him the best at what he did.
The most important part of learning how to sing with emotion is picking a song that you feel emotional about and then being willing to take every single line and make sure that song feels like there’s passion in the words you’re saying. If it’s something that you can’t connect with, it’s going to be very hard to fool somebody into thinking that you have emotion.
So emotion is real. Channel all the feels into each breath you take when singing and push it out towards the audience. Best case scenario, you make someone cry. Give it all you’ve got and we can’t wait to hear how this blog post helped you!
