How to Pick The Perfect Song.
Anyone who sings as a hobby, or as a performer sings a lot of songs.
But just because you like a song, does that mean it’s the perfect song for your voice? Or do you just like the song to listen to?
When it comes to picking the perfect song we have to get really honest and open with ourselves.
Ask yourself a few questions.
Such as:
- Does the message of the song relate to me?
- Is it in my key?
These are some the most important factors in song choice.
What do we mean by: “Is it in your Key?”
Your “key”, in this sense, is the range of notes you can sing. This would be the area of notes you are most comfortable singing. Specifically for the song, it means you can match both the highest and lowest note of a song.
The above questions are so vital because they can make or break your execution of your song. Whether it be for an audition or a performance.
That is why there has to be such an open honestly with yourself when truly answering these questions.
Don’t Just Get Into Proving How Well You Sing
The reason we ask ourselves about the message of the song is because…
This is the message you will need to convey to sing it with conviction.
This is where you will draw emotion from which will ultimately decide how to apply power and dynamics to the song.
Secondly, the key of the song is important because it gives you enough range for you to put out exactly what you need, to perform the song at your best. With confidence.
Yeah, we’ve all been there. You are performing a song, and the ENTIRE TIME your attention is on that one hard part.
How much freedom and emotion can you have, when the whole time you’re singing, your attention is on a part you haven’t even sung yet!
An audience measures a good performance, by how well it communicates. How much feeling and emotion they experience from the performer.
Think of a performance you thought of as “good”. What did it have?
Even, at an audition, they are seeing how well you can move an audience. And just singing perfect notes can’t be the reason you are singing the song.
They’ll see right through that.
It can make or break the song’s performance and how
you’d like your audience to perceive it.
You gotta have stage presence, conviction, emotion. The notes of the song go higher and lower to match those emotions!
So sing the song like you mean it. Every word.
Just having enough emotion when you sing the notes, will automatically make you be able to sing higher notes.
If you need some examples, youtube your favorite performer, live. And study, their songs, when their voice is lower, softer, higher, lower, when is it powerful.
When does is draw you in? What type of emotion do you see on their face?
So going forward fellow music enthusiast, when picking a song we need to be sure to pick a song you can relate to emotionally in some way.
Pick a song with a range that you can sing comfortably enough that you can sing through and through without having a bunch of attention on messing up.
Feel confident and secure and your song, and by gosh, made sure you can communicate the message of the song.
To every singer I wish you the best of luck in your song choices.
