Writing a Song Can Be Both Exciting And Intimidating.
When it comes to writing a song as musicians, we always want to create perfection. But striving for perfection can sometimes suck the joy out of creating. So we are suggesting that before you start writing a song, make an agreement with yourself now that
you will find the perfect balance between having fun and writing the perfect song.
Especially if you are a beginner when it comes to songwriting, understand that joy should be continuous on
the journey to “perfection.”
So What Is The Best Way To Write A Song?
Everyone has their own way of writing a song so we’ve decided to present you with some great tips to get you started. This way you can do
what works best for you or you can be inspired by these methods and create your own.
First let’s briefly speak about the different parts of a song. You have the introduction,
verse (or verses,) chorus, bridge, and an outro. Oftentimes you will hear songs with different
variations of these parts, like a song that begins with a verse but no intro or a pre-chorus before
the main chorus.
Getting creative is key when writing a song so don’t be afraid to step outside of
the norm. Here’s an example of an abnormal yet cool outro that got so popular it went viral
multiple times, including on Tik Tok. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvY0ZlkBH0E skip to
2:27 for outro)
Now Let’s Get To The Fun Part, The Actual Writing!
Every great song first starts with some type of inspiration. Whether that inspiration comes from art or life experiences, you will need
that spark.
If you have nothing particular on your mind, try free writing. Free writing is when a
person continuously writes about whatever they want. You don’t need a topic, you just write
(sometimes for a predetermined amount of time) and see what comes up.
It’s a great way to get
into a creative mindset and 9 times out of 10 you will get that spark of inspiration you need.
Once You Know What You’re Writing About, Let It Flow.
Think of this as your rough draft, you can always go back and tailor it to your liking but for now just allow your pen and
words to flow naturally.
Remember we talked about this being a joyous activity with no concern
of perfection. When you’re done writing, perform to the music you’ve selected and see how it
fits.
You can even write as you listen to the music so that you know exactly how it will sound.
Analyze what you’ve created meticulously, what do you think?
Listen To It Again With A New Set Of Ears
Maybe you should go back and add more synonyms or similes. Utilize your creative writing techniques to make the
song more interesting.
Perhaps you want to completely change a verse the next day because
you feel you can do better. This is your song so you are allowed to change it up until you feel it
is perfect.
Practice the song over and over with your music until you feel confident enough to
share it with someone else.
A Trusted Person’s Opinion
Getting a trusted outside opinion can be very helpful because they may suggest
something that you did not even think of and it can take your creativity to the next level.
Keep in mind that you may eventually present this song to an audience, whether it is live or online, so
you want to make sure that it is agreeable with someone other than you.
Don’t Keep It All To Yourself!
Beautiful music and lyrics should be shared with the world so try not to hoard your lovely
talent to just yourself.
Don’t be afraid to share your gifts with others, you never know who may
need to hear it. The more you practice writing songs, the more comfortable you will get. All it
takes is action and commitment.
